I was a tough time to be a Deadhead ! What most people heard , were uneven (TS) , lame (SS) or super slick (GTH) albums . I have heard form friends how they would read all this great stuff about the band , and then hear these albums and wonder say , ( as they say now ) "WTF"?
I know Dead,(at least some of the members) actually liked disco , and they were pretty desperate to try and get out from under the debt from the "Grateful Dead Records " fiasco, and the cost of the movie, so they were trying to have a hit .in-durable
It is interesting that songs that on album , were pretty disco, became much more soulful live . The Disco "Dancin" was much more endurable live, with the jam and all. And :Shakedown", and "Stranger", became great jam songs , so much so, that I often forget their "discoish" origins .
Being in cover bands , was rough then ! "Miss You" was usually held up as not too bad, as opposed to "Hot Stuff" ( cringe ). The New Wave thing, was a way one could react against the slick stuff, but I was one of the few folks I knew who liked it AND the Dead . The Dead were not popular or "cool" at that time, In some ways it was fun to be in on a great secret !
